Tutorial: How to install a .cab file to your mobile phone

So I have found that, like myself, there have been many people out there in the world who don't know how to install things to their phones.
I am sure there are many different file types, but the ones I have commonly come across so far are .jar, .cab and .exe files.

This is the tutorial on how to install a .cab file to your phone. For this tutorial I am assuming that you have free storage (which is required) on your phone, in either internal memory or memory card. The tutorial is also designed for the operating system Windows on your computer, and Windows Mobile 6.1 on the phone (however, many things should be the same for other versions of pocket pc).

Do this on your computer!
  1. Find the file you want to download. Download the file. This is for the program that you want to install. Important: read next step!
  2. Save the file in a safe place. I noticed for some of my files, after I installed them, when I tried to delete the .cab file off my computer I recieved error messages and warnings. Also, do NOT rename the file you downloaded, some programs have issues with this.
  3. Sync your phone with your computer. If you have never done this before, there may be a few necessary steps to take first. These may include any CD software that came with the phone, or downloading the software from the manufacturers website. Generally I suggest installing all recommeded software. If you have already synced, and any necessary software is installed, it should come up with some sort of sync options etc depending on your phone.
  4. Open 'My Computer', and you should see your phone as an external storage device (much like how a memory stick would appear).
  5. Double click your phone in My Computer. You will most likely see folders such a programs, or applications, etc. Do not delete anything!
  6. I suggest creating another folder with a name you will easily remember or find. I also don't suggest you use any special characters (such as spaces, apostrophies, full stops, etc etc) as these may cause issues with certain phones and programs.
  7. Once you have created this folder, you need to copy and paste the .cab file that you downloaded into this folder.

Now to use your phone!

  1. Go to the Start menu > Programs. This will, as you are aware, open the programs folder that shows you all the installed programs.
  2. Go to 'File Explorer', or a similar program.
  3. Make sure you are browsing your memory card (if this is where you saved the file). Navigate to that folder.
  4. Click on the .cab file. This will usually open a window that says so and so program is trying to run/install. I often find the program is unrecognized as a safe program, but just in case make sure you know where your getting it from.
  5. Agree and click all the way through until installed. If it asks for a soft reset, just turn your phone on and off. A soft reset is like a computer restart.

The program should have now installed itself. You may need to browse to the program folder and click on it to start it, but it should be there and it should now work.

Congratulations, and now go have fun.
